Multispecies Studio
Julie Andreyev’s multispecies art practice expresses care and relations with more-than-human life and the land with the aim to build a better future for our planet and all life. Creative reciprocity is at the core, fostering relations with animals and plant life through processes of interspecies communication, co-creation and stewardship. The art uses noninvasive technologies to engage with plants, trees and animals and, in exchange, offers gifts in the form of habitat and stories that advocate for care. Materials involve land-based approaches applied to listening, field recording, video, sound art, and media installation.
The multispecies art projects are grouped into 4 bodies of work:
Branching Songs, 2020-ongoing, media & sound art with trees and forests, with the goal to foster care and reciprocity for these vital ecosystems
Bird Park Survival Station, 2015-ongoing, multispecies urban conservation site and art platform with wild living birds
Wild Empathy, 2018-20, immersive art about Westcoast ancient trees and forests
Animal Lover, 2008-14, media, sound performance and video art with animals with the aim to foster compassionate relations
Multispecies studio includes public workshops that engage audiences with new experiences of noticing and listening to the land and living beings, and fostering a sense of connection.
I am an artist, researcher and educator living in so-called Vancouver, on the unceded, traditional and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish people, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. I recognize that I’m living on the traditional territories of more-than-human life including bears, deers, raccoons, eagles, ravens, crows, hummingbirds, cedars, firs, salals and others. I have exhibited my work locally, nationally and internationally, and my art practice is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, NSERC Mobilize. I have a PhD from Simon Fraser University. I am Associate Professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, and I am co-director of the Basically Good Media Lab.
